Central District

Students Learn about The Value of NYSOTA

11/15/11. Piper Crawford OTR/L, past chairperson of the Central District, spoke with Utica College Occupational Therapy students on October 26, 2011 regarding membership privileges of NYSOTA. They discussed the importance of membership in NYSOTA and the Central District as well as the accomplishments of NYSOTA this year, particularly the passage of the OT Practice Act Ammendments. The students were very attentive and interested in student membership and Piper gave each one a commorative conference tote bag for their books, groceries etc. as a gift.

OT Practitioners at E. John Gavras Center Provide Unique and Creative Programs

The E. John Gavras Center, located in Auburn, N.Y., provides occupational therapy services to individuals across the lifespan.  Therapists currently provide early intervention, preschool, school aged and out-patient services, along with occasionally covering services at a local nursing home.  They support occupational therapy students from a variety of colleges and universities by providing them with preschool and school based experiences.

The occupational therapists there recently presented “Sensory Night” at the center for parents and caregivers. The presentation included exploration and general information regarding our sensory system and senses and how sensory experiences and preferences influence how children develop.  Participants had an opportunity to explore the senses through participation in sensory specific activities.  Other unique programs the Occupational Therapists participate in include kindergarten screenings, the Fantastic Four and Five Year Olds Program (preschoolers preparing for kindergarten) as well as the Readers in Bloom Program (three and four year old literacy program).

Occupational Therapists make presentations throughout the year to various community organizations such as the Cayuga County Day Care Association and the Seanna M. Donley Growing Together Early Childhood Conference.
