Dyspraxia in children has its roots in Sensory Integration. In this course, the DSM-5 Diagnosis of Developmental Coordination Disorder and the WHO/ICD-10 Diagnostic Guidelines for Specific Developmental Disorder of Motor Function will be compared to the traditional SI-based description of Dyspraxia. Current research will be shared to better describe Childhood Dyspraxia. Additionally, current research will be shared to highlight evidence for best practice in assessment and intervention. The difference between top-down and bottom-up approaches to evaluation and intervention will be described and discussed.
The notion of task oriented intervention will be described and discussed.

Participants will also share their practice based evidence with each other and to compare to what the research evidence. Outcomes will be addressed.

1. Participants will identify commonalities between the following terms: SI-Based Dyspraxia, Childhood Dyspraxia, Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), and Specific Developmental Disorder of Motor Function (SDDMF).
2. Participants will identify assessments used, and supported in research for use, to assess children with dyspraxia.
3. Participants will describe the difference between top-down and bottom-up approaches to evaluation.
4. Participants will describe the difference between top-down and bottom-up approaches to intervention.
5. Participants will describe the term, "task-oriented intervention."
6. Participants will list strategies for addressing children with dyspraxia through OT Intervention, as supported by research.
7. Participants will share practice based evidence and discuss how this connects to evidence based practice. 


Laura Mack, COTA/L, is currently a full-time employee of Rehab Associates of WNY, contracted as a school-based occupational therapy assistant through Maryvale Union Free School District. In addition to providing occupational therapy services to children in Kindergarten through fifth grade, Ms. Mack is also a part-time Instructional Support Specialist and Adjunct Faculty at her recent alma mater, Erie Community College. Along with assisting with fieldwork coordination in the OTA Department, Ms. Mack is currently instructing courses that coincide with the OTA students’ Level IA and Level II fieldworks. Prior to her career in Occupational Therapy, Ms. Mack worked as both a Life Skills Trainer and as a Residence Counselor, providing services to individuals with developmental disabilities.

Evelyn Post-Dunn, OTR/L, Ed.M, has worked in the field of occupational therapy and has worked with children in education since 1998. Ms. Post-Dunn began her OT career working with children in Early Intervention, and in the school setting through CPSE and CSE services. Ms. Post-Dunn provided and planned for Tier I RTI Services within a large school district with a team of OT Practitioners before the term was coined. Ms. Post-Dunn has additionally worked with children as an OT Practitioner, through summer camps as well as through family health insurance, and through itinerant services. Ms. Post-Dunn has additionally taught children from the age of pre-school through elementary school, served as Director for a UPK Program, and has taught adults in the post-secondary setting. Ms. Post-Dunn has taught Education and Special Education courses at Canisius College for Education majors and now teaches as a Professor at Erie Community College's Occupational Therapy Assistant Program and is Department Head there as well.
