Interprofessional Collaborative Practice - What, Why, and How?
Dr. Mary M. Iwanenko, OTD, MS, OTR/L

The demand for what we know as Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (IPCP) arose as a result of the need for whole systems changes in health care due to rising patient death rates from increased medical errors and decreased patient safety. As such, ideal systems changes include IPCP as a cornerstone for achieving high-quality, affordable, client-centered care.

The World Health Organization (WHO) outlined in its 2010 publication, "Framework for Action on Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice", a detailed approach toward promoting health care systems and health care workers who use collaborative practice to optimize services and client care.

This course will highlight the impetus for the shift toward IPCP and review a framework and core competencies for promoting the practice.

Following this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • describe the importance of Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (IPCP) to high-quality care
  • list the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Core Competencies
  • contrast teamwork and collaboration, as well as single- versus dual-identity
  • identify the World Health Organization's Framework for Action on Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice and its use in creating a collaborative-practice ready workforce
