Empowerment Through the Exploration of Nature to Promote Community Engagement and Health Promotion
Heidi M. MacAlpine, OTD, MEd, OTR/L and Tara Collins, DHS, OTR/L

This course will provide a brief overview of the evidence that supports the use of outside activities to decrease social isolation, increase community involvement, and improve health and well-being. Occupations are seen by the individual as part of his/her identity and may be categorized as self-care, productivity, and/or leisure. Through the use of a feasible and readily-available resource such as the outdoors and nature, this leisure activity (occupation) can be adapted to meet the needs of various populations and abilities to promote health and well-being and quality of life throughout the life span.

Following this presentation, participants will be able to:
  • explain the concepts of occupation, health, and well-being
  • identify an occupational perspective on the health and well-being of individuals and communities
  • describe how outdoor activities play a role in the wellness of individuals in the community
