Course Description:
Over 3 million Americans use wheelchairs on a daily basis. Unfortunately, within this population, there is a great abundance of improper seating and positioning, which can often result in the presence of skin breakdown, decreased wheelchair tolerance, and a reduction in overall function and independence. For health care workers, the responsibility of evaluating clients, determining needs and seeking out the most appropriate form of wheelchair seating and positioning can often be quite intimidating.
Back by popular demand and all new! Dr. Davin has designed this seminar to provide equipment providers, clinicians and other health care professionals with a working knowledge of performing seating and mobility assessments, troubleshooting existing seating systems, and incorporating the skills to implementing seating and positioning equipment to increase their client’s independence. Evaluation, assessment techniques and procedures will be presented, including common diagnoses which often warrant specialized seating considerations or equipment. Information regarding a variety of cutting edge equipment including mobility bases, seating and positioning options will be reviewed, as well as the abundance of features which may be obtained to increase the client’s overall functional independence. Funding sources will be identified, and participants will receive an overview of the process of developing letters of medical necessity, as well as key elements to include in such documents for equipment approval.
For those currently struggling with patients in poor sitting positions, whether it is in a skilled nursing facility, acute care center, home health setting or elsewhere, this class is a must!

Course Objectives:
  • Identify a minimum of three wheelchair seating and positioning issues using case study assessment and interactive discussion and explain appropriate intervention to rectify/improve client presentation.
  • Define two appropriate equipment options each for diagnosis including kyphosis, scoliosis, and pelvic obliquity by applying an arsenal of information on equipment options, cushions, backs, quick fixes and other seating and positioning products.
  • Identify the written justification and correct documentation required for two pieces of assistive technology equipment in a manner which would be deemed acceptable by third party funding sources/Medicare.
  • Identify three common etiologies and pathologies which commonly necessitate assistive technology and describe their prognosis and expectations for future wheelchair seating/positioning needs.
