Current Election of Officers:

President-Elect 7/1/2018-6/30/2019

Candidate: Flo Hannes, MS, OTR, FAOTA

 Position Statement:

“OT, OT, ain’t nothing in the world we can’t do, OT”…

…chorus to a song written by the husband of an OT and performed at the 1978 Annual AOTA Conference in San Diego. The inspiration for the song came from watching 3000 OT Practitioners, Students, Educators arrive for the annual conference. The words speak to the plethora of possibilities that our profession offers...for practitioners and consumers.

In the 40 years since that song was written... our mantra continues “OT, OT, there ain’t nothing we can’t do…”. We continue to strive to increase awareness, understanding of and appreciation for our profession as other professions infringe on our scope of practice. We are innovative, aggressive, active, empowered.... to continue to keep our profession in the spotlight and to keep growing.

I was one of those young and excited OT Practitioners attending that 1978 AOTA conference, the song-writer… my supportive spouse, Andy.

Over the past 40 years I have been empowered by those words in my career roles: clinician (Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities); passionate OTA educator; and professional and community commitments: Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education, NY State Board for Occupational Therapy and active NYSOTA member.

I would now like to bring my energies, enthusiasm, experience and passion to the position of President-Elect 2018/2019.

NYSOTA, NYSOTA, ain’t nothing in the world we can’t do, NYSOTA.

Vice President 7/1/2018-6/30/2020

Candidate: Ann Russo, MS, OTR/L

Position Statement:

I respectfully submit this letter of intent to run for the position of Vice-President on the NYSOTA Executive Board. I have served as NYSOTA Treasurer since 2015 and have strived to faithfully discharge my duties as an Executive Officer. I have worked to instill sound fiscal policies and to guide the Executive Board when making operational decisions. I enjoy working with board members and volunteers to present annual conferences which offer value to members and provide funds for NYSOTA. I have coordinated the fundraising efforts at the last three annual NYSOTA conferences.

In 2011, I had the honor of participating in the AOTA Leadership Development Program for Middle Managers in Bethesda, MD. This experience, along with my extensive background in facilitating teamwork, allows me to collaborate successfully with board members to develop policies and programs.

From 2013 – 2015, I served as the Long Island District (LID) Chair and participated in NYSOTA Executive Board meetings. In addition, I held the LID Vice-Chair position from 2011-2013 and served as the LID Treasurer for six years from 2005 to 2011.

I believe strongly in the need for a vibrant occupational therapy state association to advocate for the benefit of current and future OT practitioners and consumers. I believe I have the leadership skills and drive to work alongside the President and other members of the Executive Board to strengthen NYSOTA in the years ahead.

Trustee 7/1/2018-6/30/2020

Candidate: Mildred Consolo-Melchionne, BS, COTA/L

Position Statement:

When we speak about therapeutic intervention I truly believe that the Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant is the front line of this valuable service. I believe our opinions and suggestions need to be heard and we need to preserve the way we practice. As the Academic Fieldwork Coordinator for SUNY Orange OTA program I have the opportunity to go out and visit many facilities and hear our colleagues’ concerns and joys. I also have the opportunity to teach in this program and see the future of our profession in the faces of my students. I have recently traveled to Texas to attend a forum to oppose the ACOTE mandate to move the COTA from an Associate’s degree to a Baccalaureate degree. In my first term on the board of the New York State Occupational Therapy Association I have traveled to Albany to advocate for our level of the profession and was part of the team that was successful in obtaining licensure for us. As the only Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant on the board I think I bring a unique perspective to my fellow board members. If elected I will continue to work for things that are meaningful to you as your representative.

Trustee 7/1/2018-6/30/2020

Candidate: Jeff Tomlinson, OTR, MSW, FAOTA

Position Statement:

I have spent most of my adult life volunteering for NYSOTA. I started in 1983 as the Legislation Chair for MNYD. In 1985, I served for two years as the co-chair of the NYSOTA mental health special interest group. And since 1995 I have served as NYSOTA’s Legislative and Government Relations Coordinator.

I am now seeking my second term on the NYSOTA executive board. I hope to continue to serve NYSOTA and its members through a difficult time when NYSOTA is in transition. NYSOTA faces a time when it needs to redefine what it can do to serve its members and promote the profession in New York. With the many years of experience that I have, I feel I can be of great assistance in helping NYSOTA meet those challenges.
